A roof replacement generates a lot of heavy debris. From roofing contractors preparing for the next project to a homeowner planning a roof replacement, choosing the right dumpster size will make cleanup easier and help keep the project moving.
The appropriate dumpster size depends on the roof’s total surface area, the number of shingle layers being removed, the type of roofing material, and whether damaged decking or other construction debris will also be discarded.
Choosing the Right Dumpster Size
Roofing contractors measure roofs in “squares,” with one roofing square equaling 100 square feet of roof surface. Remember that the square footage of a roof is not necessarily the same as the home’s interior square footage. Roof pitch, overhangs, dormers, attached garages, porches, and additions can all increase the total roof area.
Dash Disposal offers several roll-off dumpster sizes for roofing and construction projects:
14 Yard Dumpster
A 14-yard dumpster may be appropriate for smaller roofing projects, such as removing shingles from a detached garage, shed, porch, or small addition. However, the number and weight of the shingle layers should always be considered before selecting this size.
20 Yard Dumpster
Dash Disposal’s low-profile 20-yard dumpster is an ideal option for many residential roofing projects. It measures 22 feet long, 7.5 feet wide, and 3.5 feet tall, making it easier for crews to load heavy materials over the sides.
This dumpster is generally suitable for roofing projects covering up to approximately 4,100 square feet. It can hold about eight standard pickup truckloads of debris.
30 Yard Dumpster
For larger residential roofs, Dash Disposal’s 30-yard dumpster may be the better choice. It measures 22 feet long, 8 feet wide, and 6 feet tall, with an approximate capacity of 14 pickup truckloads.
The 30-yard dumpster is generally recommended for roofing projects covering up to approximately 6,200 square feet. It may also be appropriate when the project includes siding, underlayment, plywood, or other construction debris.
40 Yard Dumpster
A 40-yard dumpster provides the greatest volume, but it is not automatically the best option for shingles. Roofing materials are dense and may reach the container’s allowable weight before the dumpster is completely full. Always provide the roof size, shingle type, and number of layers when requesting a recommendation.
What Roofing Materials Are Accepted
Dash Disposal generally accepts asphalt shingles, tar paper, flat roofing materials, lumber, plywood, insulation, building wire, scrap metal, cardboard, and other approved construction debris.
Some materials are prohibited, including asbestos, wet paint, oil, batteries, appliances, electronics, tires, yard waste, and hazardous or flammable materials. Contact Dash Disposal before placing unusual or questionable materials in the container.
Keep Recyclable Shingles Separate
Asphalt shingles may be recyclable, but they must remain free of other debris to meet recycling requirements. Wood, metal flashing, plastic packaging, cardboard, insulation, and general construction waste can contaminate a recyclable shingle load.
If recycling is planned, contractors should use a dedicated container for qualifying asphalt shingles and collect other roofing materials separately. Older shingles, rolled roofing, flashing materials, and mastic may also contain asbestos, so questionable materials should be professionally evaluated before disposal.
Plan Your Roofing Dumpster Rental
Before reserving a dumpster, gather the total roof area, number of existing layers, roofing material type, anticipated decking removal, project dates, and preferred placement location. Providing complete information allows Dash Disposal to recommend the appropriate container for the project.
